How to do it
A simple workflow for correcting orientation and saving the finished image.
- 01
Upload the image
Choose the JPG, PNG or WebP image that is sideways.
- 02
Decide the direction
Choose Left 90° or Right 90° based on where the top of the image needs to move.
- 03
Check the preview
Confirm that text reads normally and people or objects are upright.
- 04
Check dimensions
Expect width and height to exchange places after a quarter-turn.
- 05
Download
Save the corrected image in the format you need.
Should you rotate 90° left or right?
Look at the image as it is currently displayed. Imagine turning the image until its intended top edge is at the top of your screen. If that movement goes counterclockwise, use 90° left. If it goes clockwise, use 90° right. If you are unsure, try one direction and use the preview; reversing it is immediate.
The important thing is not the wording clockwise or counterclockwise but the final orientation. For text-heavy images, use readable text as your strongest clue. For photos, faces, buildings and horizon lines are useful visual references.
What happens to image dimensions after 90°?
A 90-degree rotation swaps the image’s width and height. For example, a 1600 × 900 landscape image becomes 900 × 1600 in portrait orientation. The total number of pixels stays the same before any resizing or cropping, but the canvas orientation changes.
This matters when the rotated image is going into a fixed layout. A website card, social post or document may expect a particular aspect ratio, so inspect the output dimensions before publishing.
Fix a sideways phone photo
Sideways phone photos are one of the most common reasons for a 90° rotation. If the image looks correct in your phone’s gallery but appears sideways in another application, the issue can be related to orientation metadata or how that application interprets it. A browser-based rotation creates a visibly reoriented output image, which can be useful when you need a broadly compatible file.
Keep the original photo until you have confirmed that the corrected copy works where you need it.
Rotate scanned documents 90°
Scanned receipts, forms and pages can arrive sideways after scanning or downloading. A 90° rotation can make the document easier to read and attach to an application or email. After turning the page, check the top and bottom margins and make sure no important text is outside the visible canvas.
For multipage documents, rotating each image individually can be slow. If you have many pages, a PDF or batch-processing workflow may be more appropriate.
When 90° rotation is not the right fix
If an image is only slightly tilted, use a custom angle instead of 90°. If the content is mirrored, use a horizontal flip. If the image has the correct orientation but is too wide or too tall, resize or crop it instead. Rotation changes orientation; it is not a replacement for every other image-editing operation.
Choosing the smallest transformation that solves the actual problem helps avoid unnecessary re-encoding and extra editing.
Common questions
How do I rotate an image 90 degrees clockwise?
Open the image in a rotator and choose the right or clockwise 90° action.
How do I rotate an image 90 degrees counterclockwise?
Choose the left or counterclockwise 90° action.
Does 90° rotation change width and height?
Yes. Width and height normally swap after a quarter-turn.
Can I rotate a JPG 90 degrees?
Yes. JPG, PNG and WebP can all be rotated by 90° in RotateImg.
What if my image is only tilted a little?
Use a custom angle such as 3°, 5° or 10° instead of a full 90° rotation.
Rotate the image now.
Open the editor, make the correction and download the result.
