How to Rotate an Image 180 Degrees

If a photo or scanned page is completely upside down, a 180° rotation turns it upright in one step. Learn how it differs from a 90° rotation and a flip.

QUICK ANSWER

To rotate an image 180 degrees, select the image, apply a 180° rotation, verify that the content is upright, and download the result. Unlike a 90° turn, a 180° rotation keeps the image’s portrait or landscape orientation and normally keeps the same width and height.

How to do it

A simple workflow for correcting orientation and saving the finished image.

  1. 01

    Select the image

Open the JPG, PNG or WebP image that is upside down.

  2. 02

    Choose 180°

Use the dedicated 180° rotation action rather than two separate quarter-turns.

  3. 03

    Verify the result

Check text, faces, logos and document headers for correct orientation.

  4. 04

    Choose output

Keep the original format or select another supported output if required.

  5. 05

    Download

Save the corrected image and retain the original source file.

180° rotation vs 90° rotation

A 180-degree rotation turns the image halfway around a circle. Top becomes bottom and left becomes right, but portrait remains portrait and landscape remains landscape. A 90-degree rotation turns the image a quarter of a circle and swaps portrait and landscape.

For an upside-down document, 180° is the direct operation. For a sideways document, 90° is the appropriate correction. Using the wrong angle can make the image harder to read rather than fixing it.

Rotate an upside-down scan

Scanned pages can be inverted when a sheet is placed on a scanner or photographed from the wrong direction. A 180° rotation restores the page orientation without changing its aspect ratio. Check the first line of text and the position of page numbers after rotation.

For forms, receipts and invoices, inspect small text near the edges before downloading. A correct rotation should not crop the original content.

Fix an upside-down photo

An upside-down photo is easy to correct when the intended top is obvious. Faces, buildings, signs and landscapes provide strong visual cues. Apply 180° and compare the preview with the original. If the image looks mirrored rather than inverted, use a horizontal flip instead.

A 180° rotation does not inherently require cropping because the original rectangle still fits the rotated rectangle.

Does a 180° rotation reduce quality?

The transformation itself does not change the number of source pixels, but exporting the result can re-encode the image. This is most noticeable with lossy formats such as JPEG. Keep the original file and avoid multiple save cycles if the image is important.

If you need to perform several edits, complete them in one workflow and export once when practical.

180° rotation or image flip?

A 180° rotation changes both vertical and horizontal orientation. A horizontal flip mirrors left and right, while a vertical flip mirrors top and bottom. These operations can look similar in some symmetrical images, but they produce different results.

Use text or a recognizable object to tell the difference. If the text is backwards after your operation, you probably mirrored the image rather than simply rotating it.

Common questions

How do I rotate an image upside down?

Use a 180° rotation, then check the preview to confirm that the content is upright.

Does 180° rotation change image dimensions?

The width and height normally remain the same because the image keeps its original portrait or landscape orientation.

Can I rotate a PNG 180 degrees?

Yes. PNG images can be rotated 180° and exported as PNG.

Is 180° rotation the same as flipping?

No. A 180° rotation changes both axes; a single horizontal or vertical flip mirrors the image across one axis.

Can I rotate a JPG 180 degrees online?

Yes. A browser-based image rotator can rotate a JPG 180° and let you download the corrected image.
