QUICK ANSWER

To rotate a PNG online, select the file, choose a 90°, 180° or custom angle, inspect the preview and export the result as PNG. PNG is especially useful when your image contains transparency, text, interface graphics or other content where avoiding additional JPEG compression matters.

How to do it

A simple workflow for correcting orientation and saving the finished image.

  1. 01

    Select the PNG

Choose the transparent graphic, screenshot, diagram or other PNG you need to correct.

  2. 02

    Rotate it

Use 90° left or right for orientation changes, 180° for an upside-down graphic, or a custom angle for fine adjustment.

  3. 03

    Check transparency

Look around the corners and edges after rotation, especially if the source contains transparent areas.

  4. 04

    Keep PNG when needed

Select PNG output when preserving transparency or lossless-style encoding is important.

  5. 05

    Download

Save the rotated PNG and keep the original source file as a backup.

Why rotate a PNG instead of converting it first?

PNG is commonly used for graphics rather than photographic images. Logos, screenshots, interface elements, diagrams, icons and images with transparency often benefit from PNG’s format characteristics. If the only problem is orientation, there is little reason to convert the file to JPEG before rotating it.

Keeping the workflow in PNG also avoids introducing JPEG compression into a graphic that may contain sharp text or flat-color edges. If the destination specifically requires JPG, convert only after you have completed the edits you need.

What happens to transparent PNG corners?

When a rectangular image is rotated by an angle such as 15° or 30°, the corners of the original rectangle no longer fill the new rectangular canvas. A browser canvas can preserve those uncovered areas as transparency when exporting to PNG. This is expected behavior, not a defect in the rotation.

A 90° or 180° rotation normally fits neatly into a rectangular canvas, so there are no diagonal transparent corners caused by the angle itself. Custom-angle rotations are where the difference becomes most visible.

Rotate a PNG 90 degrees

A 90-degree turn is useful for sideways screenshots, diagrams, scanned pages and graphics. Use left or right depending on the desired orientation. Because the image turns a quarter of a circle, its width and height swap in the exported result.

For a logo or icon, check how surrounding transparent space looks after the turn. If the image will be placed in a fixed-size container, you may need to crop or resize it afterward.

Rotate a PNG by a custom angle

Custom angles are useful when a graphic needs alignment rather than a complete orientation change. A slightly crooked scan can be corrected with a small angle. A diagram can be aligned with a page or presentation. A screenshot can be straightened before being added to documentation.

Use the preview to judge the edges. When the angle is not a multiple of 90°, the new canvas may become larger and the corners may remain transparent. If you need a tightly cropped rectangle, rotation and cropping are separate steps.

PNG or JPG after rotation?

Choose PNG when transparency, sharp graphics or lossless-style encoding is important. Choose JPG when the image is photographic and a smaller file is more useful than transparency. The best output is determined by the destination rather than by the rotation operation itself.

For a transparent logo, converting to JPG after rotation will remove the alpha channel and replace transparent regions with a background. If transparency matters, keep the PNG.

Common PNG rotation use cases

PNG rotation is useful for screenshots, UI mockups, logos, diagrams, educational graphics, scanned pages and web assets. Developers may rotate a screenshot before adding it to documentation. Designers may correct a transparent graphic before placing it into a presentation. Students may rotate a scanned diagram before submitting an assignment.

Because PNG graphics can contain crisp text and edges, inspect the preview at a useful zoom level before downloading.

Common questions

Can I rotate a transparent PNG?

Yes. PNG is a good choice when transparency needs to be retained during the export.

Will a rotated PNG have transparent corners?

Custom-angle rotations can create transparent or uncovered corners because the rotated rectangle needs a larger bounding box.

Does a 90° PNG rotation change its dimensions?

Yes. Width and height normally swap after a 90° rotation.

Can I rotate a PNG without converting to JPG?

Yes. You can rotate and export as PNG throughout the workflow.

Is PNG better than JPG for logos?

PNG is generally more suitable when the logo needs transparency or crisp graphic edges.
